Bev Paton – Developing Care, Curiosity, Clarity & Courage

About Bev

I grew up in Zimbabwe, spent my 20’s in South Africa and moved to the UK for a travel experience in 1997, fell in love with the people, place and opportunities and have made Oxfordshire our home. I believe in the power of connection, and am on a life long journey to build true connection with myself, with others and with our communities as well as hold the space for others to explore this for themselves.

Bev’s Experience

I believe that there are 4 key aspects to a way of being that enable us to make a true difference to people and the world around us – we need to CARE enough, we need to have deep CURIOSITY about ourselves, others and situations, we need to get to a place of CLARITY and we need to embrace the COURAGE that it takes to take the next step and do what it takes to help things go right.

I am an experienced coach, mediator, facilitator, leadership and organisational development consultant and have worked across several industries, bringing a real breadth of experience, knowledge and expertise.

I started in the banking industry, moved into retail, and then into the world of research and consulting, which shaped the way for co-founding a consulting style business in 2006. I have worked with multiple corporates, large businesses, small businesses, individuals, schools, universities and spent the most recent 4 years using these skills within the NHS, a challenging and fantastically rewarding environment.

Five questions, five answers…

What has been your most pivotal moment in business?

The day I truly understood that business and relationship building is always about what you are giving. Having clarity about the difference you want to make, and how you want to be in the world shapes what you intentionally develop around who you are being and what you are doing in order to build up what you have for the purpose of equipping yourself for what you want to give.

If you could send a text to yourself the day you started out in business what would it say?

Know your purpose, be true to your purpose, weigh up your choices and decisions in light of your purpose, and build relationships first. Believe in yourself and the contribution you can make.

Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?

One of them would be Nelson Mandela – he was purpose-driven, he cared, he was curious, he had the ability to listen deeply and be completely present in the moment, and he showed great courage in doing what it took to help things go right.

What book should all business owners read?

This is a challenge as I have so many books I could offer here. I have narrowed it down to 3.

  • Start with Why, by Simon Sinek – this book helps more than any other to outline the importance of having clarity of WHY, the discipline of HOW and the consistency of WHAT, which serves as an anchor when you start and develop your business.
  • The Business Model Canvas – provides a framework and structure for your business that is comprehensive and simple to use to guide your areas of focus
  • The ONE thing – Gary Keller – a simple and powerful question to get in the habit of asking yourself regularly – ‘what is the ONE thing I can do that will make everything else easier today/this week/this month/this year?’
